We're constantly making Smoothy better. Here are some of the notable new features and improvements that we've made since we first launched.

Real-time performance metrics for your deployments

December 5, 2019

Today we are proud to announce a new feature in Smoothy: Real-time performance metrics! 📊

This addition is a major step in the direction of turning Smoothy into a fully transparent cloud platform. It enables software developers to debug their applications, anticipate compute resource shortages, and select the optimal server size for an application, without having to dive deep into the depths of their server.

If you head over to the deployments page of your team, for each deployment you now find three progress bars representing its current resource consumption. The progress bars are updated every 5 seconds and give you a birds-eye view of which deployments are short on compute resources.

If you click on one of your deployments, you also find a new item labeled Metrics in the navigation on the left side of the page. If you click this item, you land on a page similar to the one in the screenshot below. On this page, you get real-time insights into the most important performance metrics of your deployment. By changing the range in the upper-right corner of the page, you can inspect the metrics of the last 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 3 hours.

Point a Smoothy-generated domain name to your application

December 1, 2019

Smoothy allows you to expose your application to the WorldWide Web in the form of endpoints. Until now, you could create two types of endpoints:

  1. Open a port on your deployment and forward it to your application
  2. Point your own domain name to your application

For context: the first type is suitable for applications that communicate over HTTP or TCP, such as databases, queues, message brokers, etc. The second type is suitable for web applications that communicate over HTTPS.

Recently, an issue was raised by one of our customers saying that whenever he wanted to quickly spin up and test one of its web applications, he always needed to alter the DNS records of its domain in order to point it to its application. And while this only took him a minute of work, he wished that this workflow could be improved.

In response to this, as of today, Smoothy offers you the ability to create a third type of endpoint: Point a Smoothy-generated domain to your application. This endpoint points a Smoothy-generated domain name, similar to the one in the screenshot below, to your application and allows you to test your application over a secure HTTPS connection, without having to use and configure your own domain name.

To learn more about this new type of endpoint, we recommend you to read through the related page in our documentation.

Global SSH keys

September 14, 2019

If you are working with multiple people on your team or regularly work with freelancers or external consultants, you might want to have fine-grained control over who can access which deployment over SSH. Therefore, installing SSH keys for every deployment individually allows you to do so.

However, if you are working with a small team or don't bother giving everyone on your team access to your deployments, having to manually install the SSH keys on every new deployment can be annoying. Therefore we are happy to introduce to you: global SSH keys! 🎉

On the settings page of your team, you will now find a new section called SSH keys. Here you can add the SSH keys of you and the team members that you like to grant access to every new deployment.

Upon creation of a new deployment, Smoothy automatically installs all the global SSH keys, so you don't have to think about them anymore.

Easily provide feedback within Smoothy

August 6, 2019

Smoothy is a bootstrapped startup so every customer is a big deal to us. It is our mission to make your life, together with that of many other software developers, easier and more fun. However, for that, we need your help! Only through close collaboration with our customers we can keep improving our cloud platform and build the features they need. Therefore, we added a new feedback link in the top-navigation of Smoothy.

If you click this link, a modal appears, similar to the one in the screenshot below. Through this modal, you can quickly send us some feedback or tell us about your experience with Smoothy.

Inspect pending server updates

July 19, 2019

Servers consist of many software packages and libraries that from time to time need to get updated. Smoothy now shows you the number of pending updates as part of your deployment's health check. This helps you keep your deployments up-to-date and secure.
